London Tube trains and stations to get 4G by 2024

On the surface, we have 5G, but in the Tube, it remains to enjoy 4G. Vodafone boasts that it will provide coverage on London Tube as early as 2024.

Vodafone, which has been providing 4G service on the eastern end of the Jubilee Line from Westminster to Canning Town since early 2020, is partnering with Transport for London (TfL) and BAI Communications so its customers can take advantage of this new Tube-wide coverage. Of the 129 underground stations and 192 tunnels not currently covered by any mobile signal, Bank, Oxford Circus, Tottenham Court Road, Euston, and Camden Town will be among the first to come online by the end of 2022. The 4G signal will reach not only ticket halls and platforms, but tunnels, too. Vodafone will provide continuous 4G coverage to their customers across London Underground stations and tunnels and will be 5G ready.

Ahmed Essam, Vodafone’s UK CEO, said: “The UK needs world-class digital infrastructure, and bringing 4G and 5G to the London Underground is a big part of that. 4G on the eastern stretch of the Jubilee Line is already making a huge difference to our customers, and we’re proud to continue our investment in keeping consumers and businesses connected across more parts of London.”

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, said: “I promised Londoners that if they re-elected me for a second term as Mayor I would deliver 4G throughout the Tube network as part of my determination to build a better London for everyone – and I have no doubt that this will transform journeys for millions of passengers.”

BAI Communications, which is operating the 4G network on behalf of TfL, is responsible for similar networks on public transportation in Hong Kong, Toronto and New York.
